Busy March Slate
Tommie Baseball (2-5 overall) is back home Tuesday evening in the Twin Cities for a rare indoor game. The Tommies test the host Minnesota Gophers in a nine-inning contest Tuesday (6 p.m.) at U.S. Bank Stadium. It's the first of 14 March games on the schedule for St. Thomas. Next weekend brings a trip to Omaha and three games vs. Creighton.
Tickets for the Gopher-Tommie clash are $10 for general admission and can be purchased HERE:
The Toms posted their first Division I victories during last week's 2-1 trip to Richmond, Va. The trip produced 2-0 and 3-2 wins over Sacred Heart University, plus a 12-inning defeat to Richmond, 4-3.
Gopher-Tommie Series
Minnesota has won 18 of the last 20 against St. Thomas in a span since 1987. The series was dormant for many recent years of the Toms' Division III era. These schools' last head-to-head meeting was May 1, 2012, a 9-2 Gophers victory in what was the final game played at the old Siebert Field.
The Toms scored an 8-3 win over the Gophers in April 2011 at Siebert; couldn't hold a ninth-inning lead and lost 5-4 in 12 innings to the U of M in the Metrodome in March 2010; and edged the Gophers 6-3 in April 2009 at Siebert.
Before that, St. Thomas had lost 16 in a row to the Gophers from 1988-2008, including one-run losses in 1996 and 1999. In fact, before that Tommie 2009 win, MIAC teams had lost nearly 50 in a row to Minnesota since 1987 when the Toms and Augsburg each split doubleheaders with the Gophers.
