Morey Smith climbs Track and Field's all-time indoor list in mile

2/8/2022 2:20:00 PM | Men's Track & Field

Junior Morey Smith won the mile at last Saturday's University of Minnesota Gopher Classic in 4:11.77 -- moving him into No. 2 on the St. Thomas Men's Track and Field indoor mile all-time list.

It was the fastest indoor mile by a Tommie in 10 seasons. The time is 1.2 seconds off the school record set in 2012 by D-III national champion cross country runner Ben Sathre. It also was more than five seconds faster than Smith's best mile time posted during a shortened 2021 indoor season.

Smith's latest time -- recorded on a 200-meter track -- converts to 4:08.6 for NCAA ranking purposes, and sits No. 3 so far in the mile on the 2022 Summit League Indoor season-best performance list.

Smith placed 15th in The Summit League cross country meet last October to help St. Thomas take second place out of eight teams. He broke 25:00 for 8,000 meters at the Bradley race clicking 24:50.7.

The Clive, Iowa, native has made rapid improvement over his St. Thomas career. He placed 96th in the MIAC cross country meet as a freshman in October 2019. Smith had a breakout season on the track last spring in the 2021 outdoor season, clocking personal bests of 1:54.94 for 800 meters and 3:50.84 for 1,500 meters. He qualified for the Division III national outdoor meet, and became St. Thomas' first conference outdoor 1,500-meter champion in 21 seasons.

That 3:50.84 clocking at the UW-La Crosse Last Chance meet last May is less than two seconds off Kyle Brandon's 2009 school record of 3:49.14.

At Waukee High, located west of Des Moines, Smith showed potential to develop into a competitive college runner. He anchored his 4x800 relay team to fourth place at state as a senior in 2019. His best open times in high school track were 4.28.4 in the 1,600 meters, 9:52.9 in the 3,200 and 1:59.6 for 800 meters. In cross country, he placed 85th at the state meet as a junior but improved to 35th at state as a senior.
