Richmond, Va. -- Redshirt junior Charlie Bartholomew's reputation for clutch late-game at-bats continues into the Division I era.
Bartholomew's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday morning let St. Thomas Baseball walk-off Sacred Heart University in non-conference play. The Toms' 3-2 victory over the Pioneers let them take two wins in three Richmond games.
Sam Kulesa went 3-for-5 and scored all three runs, including the game winner after his one-out triple in the ninth inning. After a ground out and a walk, Bartholomew's single brought home Kulesa and closed out the win for St. Thomas (2-5). Kyle Halverson drove in the Toms' first two runs. He reached base all five times via a hit and an error, and three walks.
Bartholomew went 2-for-4 -- his 13th multi-hit game over the last two seasons. He has 52 hits in 46 career games, and the Toms are 10-3 in games when Bartholomew has two or more hits.
Tommie redshirt sophomore newcomer Devon Schewe was sharp in his Division I pitching debut. The Lakeville North grad and former junior-college hurler worked seven shutout innings with 11 strikeouts while allowing just one walk and three hits. He left with a 2-0 lead.
Held to four hits overall, Sacred Heart (0-3) tied the score with two unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning. But the Toms, who left nine on base over the first eight innings, put together the ninth-inning surge to end the trip on a positive note.
Redshirt sophomore Duke Coborn worked a scoreless ninth inning and was credited with the mound win.
Over their six starts so far, St. Thomas top four starting pitchers have built a 2.07 ERA with 48 strikeouts and just 16 walks.
The Tommies recorded three walk-off wins in 2021 en route to their NCAA runner-up finish in Division III, using two game-winning hits by Matthew Enck and a third by Jake Porter.
St. Thomas plays another nine-inning non-conference game Tuesday March 1 (6 p.m.) at U.S. Bank Stadium against the Minnesota Gophers. It's the first of four scheduled games against Minnesota this season.
