Retz, Laubscher combine on three-hit shutout with 18 Ks

Richmond, Va. -- Freshman Walker Retz and senior Graham Laubscher combined on a three-hit shutout with 18 strikeouts on Friday morning to lead St. Thomas Baseball to its first Division I victory, 2-0, over Sacred Heart University. The nine-inning, non-conference game was played at the University of Richmond.

The Tommies are scheduled to play host Richmond at noon Minnesota time today. They will close the trip with a Saturday morning game against Sacred Heart.

The Purple (1-4) left eight runners on base but pushed across single runs in the fifth and eighth innings. That was enough scoring on a day when their pitching was crisp, they played error-free defense, and catcher Charlie Bartholomew gunned down two runners looking to steal second.

The Pioneers (0-2) of Fairfield, Ct., managed just six baserunners on three walks and three singles, and none advanced past second base.

A freshman from Boyceville, Wis., Retz took the mound in just his second college game after getting a no decision in a four-inning start last Saturday in Miami against Florida International. The right-hander shut down Sacred Heart en route to the staff's first D-I victory. He worked the first six innings and allowed two hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts., and lowered his season ERA to 0.90 with 16 strikeouts in 10 innings.

Laubscher came on with a 1-0 lead and allowed just one single and one walk with six strikeouts over the final three innings. The Stillwater, Minn., earned his first D-I save and lowered his season ERA to 2.00 with 14 strikeouts in nine innings.

Matthew Enck had a one-out single in the top of the fifth to score the game's first run. Avery Lehman was hit by pitch, stole second and came hom on Enck's RBI hit.

The Toms added an insurance run in the top of the eighth as Kyle Halverson walked, took second on a ground out and scored on Jake Porter's RBI single.

Richmond 4, St. Thomas 3

Richmond, Va. -- Jason Neff's solo home run to start the bottom of the 12th inning lifted host Richmond to a 4-3 win over St. Thomas in Friday afternoon's non-conference baseball game on the Spiders' field.

Richmond (4-1), an Atlantic-10 Conference team, never trailed and blanked the Tommie offense over the last seven innings. St. Thomas left 10 on base while Richmond left eight, with the Spiders' outhitting the Toms 7-5.

The Purple (1-5), who have been the away team in all six games on the season, have taken one- or two-run losses in four of their five defeats.

Four St. Thomas pitchers allowed three earned runs over 11-plus innings against the Spiders. Starter Kolby Gartner allowed two earned runs, four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Jack Blesch allowed a hit and a walk with one strikeout in two innings. Freshman Evan Esch pitched the next three innings and allowed just one hit with three Ks. T.J. Constertina took the loss after working 2.0-plus innings and allowing only the one hit to Neff.

Trailing 3-0 after four innings, the Toms loaded the bases in the top of the fifth on Jake Porter's double, an error on a bunt by Tyler Marsh, and a walk to Matthew Enck. After two strikeouts, freshman Brigs Richartz slapped a two-run single to cut the lead to 3-2. Kyle Halverson struck out, but the catcher dropped the ball and the tying run scored as the batter reached first.

St. Thomas stranded two runners in the eighth and let a single runner on base in the 10th, 11th and 12th innings.

The Tommies will close the trip with a Saturday morning game against Sacred Heart.
