Men’s Basketball snaps 12-game skid with a 10-point win over North Dakota
2/22/2022 2:09:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Grand Forks, N.D. – The St. Thomas Men's Basketball Team (9-19, 3-13) used an efficient offensive effort to snap their 12-game skid with an 84-74 win over North Dakota (6-24, 2-15) in Grand Forks for the final road game of the 2021-22 season.
The Purple took an 11-point lead into halftime and led by as many as 25 points in the Tommies win over the Fighting Hawks. As a team, St. Thomas shot 49 percent (27-of-55) from the field, 33 percent (10-of-30) from behind the arc and 91 percent (20-of-22) from the charity stripe and only committed six turnovers in the game.
"I'm very proud of how the guys played with tremendous energy and togetherness today, said Head Coach Dr. Johnny Tauer. "Throughout this historic season, our players have embraced this unique journey as they lay the foundation and legacy for St Thomas basketball at the Division 1 level. Two of our program pillars are adaptability and trust. Today, without four year starter and former D3 national freshman of the year, Anders Nelson, our guys embraced opportunities with guys like Kevin Cunningham, Zach Theisen, Benny Nau, Dom Martinelli, and Brooks Allen all playing extended minutes."
"These guys are a joy to coach and it's special for our seven seniors to get a victory on our last road trip of the season," Tauer added.
The Fighting Hawks soared to a 6-0 lead through the first three minutes of the game. The Tommies earned their first lead, 14-13, with 12:24 to play in the first half. UND briefly regained the lead before St. Thomas controlled a 17-16 lead with just over 11 minutes to play in the first half.
Through the final 10 minutes of the first half, St. Thomas went on a 27-14 run to open a 41-30 lead going into the locker room at halftime. Through the late first-half run, the Purple connected on 9-of-13 shots from the field and 4-of-6 from deep and protected the ball, not committing a turnover.
In the first half, St. Thomas connected on 14-of-26 (54 percent) from the field, 6-of-14 (43 percent) from behind the arc and 7-of-9 (78 percent) from the charity stripe. The Purple only committed two first-half turnovers.
Grad student G Ryan Lindberg led the scoring efforts with seven points. St. Thomas used a balanced scoring effort in the first half, all nine Tommie that saw the floor contributed at least three first-half points.
Through the first eight minutes of the second half, the Purple powered their way to the largest lead of the game, 25 points, 59-34 with 12:18 to play in the game. UND battled its way back into the ball game, going on a 40-25 run through the final 12 minutes of the game, but the lead proved to be too much as St. Thomas snapped its 12-game losing streak and ended North Dakota's chances of making the Summit League Tournament.
Individually, all nine players that saw the court for the Purple contributed at least three points. There were five Tommies that reached double digits, led by Lindberg with 14 points. He was joined by senior G Riley Miller (12), junior F Brooks Allen (12), senior F Parker Bjorklund (10) and grad student G Burt Hedstrom (10) as the leading scorers for St. Thomas.
The Tommies return to action on Thursday as they host the University of Denver at Schoenecker Arena. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
