Allen’s career outing isn’t enough to overcome South Dakota State in Frost Arena

Brookings, S.D. – Senior Brooks Allen scored a career-high 30 points in an impressive come-back effort that fell short in a 71-64 loss to South Dakota State.
 
The Jackrabbits held a 61-44 lead with 7:57 to play before the Tommies went on an 18-5 run to trim the SDSU lead to four points, 66-62 with 1:08 to play. St. Thomas was unable to complete the comeback as the Jackrabbits outscored the Tommies 5-2 in the final minute of competition.
 
The Tommies forced four turnovers in the first five minutes of the game to open a 13-4 lead at the first media timeout. The Purple connected on a pair of three pointers to start the game, while the Jackrabbits missed their first four shots from deep.
 
SDSU answered with a 24-6 run of their own to equal St. Thomas' largest lead, nine points, 28-19 with 4:16 to play in the first half.
 
The Tommies would trim the Jackrabbits lead to five points, 32-27 going into intermission. Senior Brooks Allen led all first-half scorers with 15 points and connected on 3-of-5 attempts from behind the arc.
 
St. Thomas committed eight first-half turnovers, but on the defensive end did post three steals and forced five SDSU turnovers in the first half.
 
The Tommies were unable to get anything going from behind the arc in the second half, connecting on 3-of-12 threes in the final 20 minutes, and connected on 11-of-28 shots from the field.
 
Brooks (30 points) was joined by in double digits by freshman Kendall Blue who got the start on the afternoon. Fellow freshman Ahjany Lee pulled in a team-high eight rebounds and scored four points and blocked three shots off the bench.
 
As a team, St. Thomas shot 40 percent (21-of-53) from the field, 29 percent (7-of-24) and 68 percent (15-of-22) from the charity stripe and committed an uncharacteristic 15 turnovers in the loss.
 
The Purple continues Summit League action on Thursday as they host Denver University. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. from Schoenecker Arena.
