Men's Hockey drops close contest to visiting Ferris, splits series

Mendota Heights, Minn. -- Brenden MacLaren scored a goal and assist to lead Ferris State to a 4-2 comeback win over Tommie Men's Hockey and a weekend series split in CCHA play Saturday night.
The Bulldogs (8-8-2 overall, 6-5-1 CCHA) bounced back from a 7-4 loss here on Friday night. They tied the game 2-2 with 6:33 left in period two and never looked back. They took their first lead of the contest with 11:51 to go in period three on MacLaran's tap-in rebound shot.
FSU added an empty-net goal with 61 seconds to play to close out the win. Noah Giesbrecht had 34 saves in net for the winners.
The Tommies (5-14-1, 4-9-1) took leads of 1-0 and 2-1 on goals by Matthew Jennings and Jake Braccini. But St. Thomas' offense was unable to finish over the game's final 33:00.
The Purple outshot Ferris 36-25. Aaron Trotter had 22 saves.
Next Up
Saturday was St. Thomas' final game of the 2022 calendar year. The Purple travel to Duluth on Dec. 31 to play a 2 p.m. exhibition game against the UMD Bulldogs.
They resume CCHA play Jan. 13-14 with a Friday-Saturday series at Michigan Tech.

Did You Know?
- Braccini capped a five-point weekend and has recorded three goals over his his last six games.
- Jennings returned to the ice Friday after a 10-game injury layoff. He was in the lineup for the first eight games of this season but last played on Oct. 29. His Saturday goal late in period one was his first recorded goal since late in the 2021-22 season.
- The programs have split all four CCHA series played, all over the last 15 months. Further illustrating the teams' parity, the Toms have a slim 27-23 scoring edge combined over those eight games.
- The Toms scored four power-play goals on the weekend and killed off all eight Ferris power plays.
