Women's Hoops hangs tough but falls 58-46 at Northern Iowa
11/7/2022 7:14:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Cedar Falls, Iowa - Tommie sophomore guard Jade Hill finished with 14 points, four assists and four rebounds to lead the upset bid, but the host Northern Iowa Panthers eventually found some breathing room late in Monday night's 58-46 non-conference win in the women's basketball opener for both teams.
The Panthers were a 23-win team last season that came within one basket of winning an automatic trip to the NCAA tournament. That UNI team, which went 1-1 in the National Invitational Tournament, beat the Tommies 102-62 in St. Paul on Dec. 1.
In this contest, UNI led just 30-28 at halftime, and fell behind 33-30 early in quarter three. The Purple were still within 49-44 before UNI closed the game on a 9-2 run over the final 3:28.
Sophomore Jordyn Lamker added career highs with nine points and nine rebounds for St. Thomas. Freshman Amber Scalia scored seven points in her collegiate debut.
Coach Ruth Sinn's team, with three first-time starters, hung around for all 40 minutes despite 22 turnovers and 5-of-19 shooting behind the arc. The Purple outrebounded the Panthers 37-29.
