Mack attack: Byers' two goals lead Men's Hockey win

10/29/2022 7:20:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Big Rapids, Mich. -- Transfer Mack Byers scored a short-handed and an empty net goal and freshman Aaron Trotter stopped 34 of 36 shots in Saturday's 5-2 Tommie Men's Hockey road win over Ferris State in CCHA play.

The victory halted a three-game slide for the Tommies (2-6 overall, 1-1 CCHA), who had lost 3-2 here in overtime on Friday to the Bulldogs.

The Toms converted 3-of-7 power-play tries here Saturday after a slow start to the season with the man advantage. They also collected a short-handed goal and an empty-net goal.

Grant Docter contributed a goal and an assist for the Purple, who received points from eight players. Josh Eernisse scored the first goal of the evening and his second of the series. Lucas Wahlin also scored a third-period goal for a two-goal lead.

Next Up

The Toms open their home conference season next Friday night against Minnesota State in Mendota Heights. Those teams play again Saturday evening Nov. 5 in Mankato to close out the two-game series.

Did You Know?
  • The Toms ended an 11-game road losing streak dating back to last winter, a string that included three overtime losses.
  • St. Thomas' five goals matched their D-I high for a single game set last season's home win against Ferris.
  • St. Thomas and Ferris are now 3-3 vs. each other over the last 12 months, with two more games later this season
  • Byers becomes the sixth different Tommie and first of 2022-23 to record a two-goal scoring game so far in the D-I era (44 games).
  • The Toms improved to 2-1 on Saturdays this season.

Quoting Coach Rico Blasi (on SkorNorth radio post-game show)

"Obviously we're happy, especially with our first period (play). We had a hunch this was going to be a special teams battle, it sure was. Both teams had to step up with their power play... we got timely goals. Tonight we got the bounces, last night we didn't get the bounces, but we worked for our bounces tonight... We have to win our battles -- we have to win the first battle in the face-off circle, as that puts everybody in a better spot."
