Men's Hockey comes close, again, but falls to Falcons
1/7/2022 10:12:00 PM | Men's Hockey
Mendota Heights, Minn. -- Bowling Green received goals from four different players and points from eight different skaters and never trailed in Friday night's 4-2 road defeat of St. Thomas in CCHA men's hockey action.
The Falcons (10-8-3 overall, 7-5-1 CCHA) broke a 2-2 third-period tie with Taylor Schneider's power-play goal 7:24 into the last frame. They added an empty-net goal in the closing seconds to secure the victory.
Senior Peter Thome stopped 29 of 32 shots for the Tommies (1-20, 1-14). Sophomore Kimball Johnson scored his first Division I goal for the Purple to tie the game 1-1 late in the first period. Freshman Cameron Recchi scored midway through period two to knot the score at 2-2.
The Toms went 0-for-5 on the power play agauinst a stingy BGSU penalty kill. Recchi and Mattherw Jennings assissted on the first goal, and Logan Ommen assisted on the second goal.
St. Thomas has been within two or less goals in the third period in 13 of their 20 defeats.
Tommie coach Rico Blasi said a few small mistakes put a damper on what was another solid effort and battle by his team.
"Outside the one (missed) penalty kill (that scored the go-ahead goal), we had chances to get (the puck) out, but we didn't, and they kept in it the entire two minutes and scored at the end of (the power play)," Blasi said. "Other than that, I thought the process was pretty good. We probably deserved a little bit better, but that's a good team, they wore us down, and we couldn't get much offense in the last five minutes (to get a tying goal).
"I'm happy with our process. It's kind of been like that all year, right? We're in games, we just have to focus on the details. Some of the shifts that were out there, we didn't pay attention to the details. All of the sudden you ice the puck then you have to be out there longer, maybe we have a turnover, now you have to play defense longer, then we had the too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty, that's a detail. The effort has always been there. We're getting close, maybe closer than we have all year. We have to stay positive. We have an opportunity tomorrow to build on what we did today.
"(Thome) made some big saves. A couple of times (we) got mixed up with the exchanges on the defense. But Peter gave us a chance to win the game.
"We just have to continue to focus on the details. When the details are good, you are going to get bounces. But when your details aren't good, then you leave things to chance. We can't afford to leave things to chance. We have to be, I don't want to say perfect, but we have to be perfect on the details. This is a game of mistakes. It's the team that makes the least amount of mistakes that wins games. They are going to make mistakes, we are going to make mistakes. But we can't allow ourselves to add to that by not paying attention to details."
The teams close out the season four-game series with Saturday night's weekend finale on the Tommies' home ice.
