Matthew Jennings (9) salutes goalie Jacob Berger (31) after his 22-save night kept the Tommies in the contest

So close... but Men's Hockey takes 3-on-3 OT loss

Mendota Heights, Minn. -- Alex Barber converted a breakaway goal 13 seconds into a 3-on-3 overtime session to lift Bowling Green to a 2-1 win over St. Thomas in Saturday night CCHA men's hockey play.

The Falcons (11-8-3 overall, 8-5-1 CCHA) closed out a 4-0 season sweep of the Tommies achieved by final scores of 4-2, 3-0, 4-2 (including empty netter) and 2-1 (overtime). All four games were tied or within one or two goals in the final period.

St. Thomas (1-21, 1-15) lost in overtime for the second time in three games. The Purple have been tied or within one or two goals in the third period in 14 of their losses.

Jacob Berger stopped 22 of 23 shots in regulation for the Tommies.

St. Thomas' Matthew Jennings scored a goal in the opening two minutes of the contest, assisted by Cameron Recchi and Logan Ommen. But BGSU answered early in period two with a power-play goal to tie the score 1-1.

The Falcons helped shut down the St. Thomas power play in this weekend's series killing all nine, including an 0-for-4 total on Saturday. The Toms killed off eight of 10 power plays on the series.

"We played hard, I thought our details were better tonight," said St. Thomas coach Rico Blasi. "At the end of the night, they won the game and we didn't. We have to stay positive, got back to work on Monday, and try to get better.

I thought (Berger) did a good job. Our goaltending is giving us a chance to win. We haven't been able to help them out, either one of them (with enough offense).

"Our power play hasn't been very good. Our special teams need to be better. We just go back to work on Monday, start getting better again, build off the details and the process we had this weekend, and we get another opportunity to play on Friday."

St. Thomas travels to Ferris State for two conference games Jan. 14-15.
