St. Paul, Minn. - St. Thomas women's basketball (6-8, 3-1 Summit League) earned a 73-62 win over North Dakota State (6-10, 2-4 Summit League) on Thursday.
The Tommies were led by Erin Norling (34) and Jade Hill (22) offensively as the two players combined for 56 points. Norling went 6-9 from deep while Hill was 7-8 at the free throw line. Kaia Porter fell just short of a double-double as she tallied nine points and 10 boards against the Bison.
Hill, a freshman guard, kicked off the scoring for St. Thomas with a pair of successful free throws at the 7:51 mark. Down by six points, 14-8, the Toms put together a 6-0 run on baskets from Norling and Hill. Norling, a graduate senior playing at the forward position, scored six points in the first 10 minutes against the Bison. After the first period, St. Thomas led North Dakota State, 18-16.
A step back jump-shot from Hill to open the second quarter extended the team's lead to four points, 20-16. Graduate forward Porter and Norling tallied back-to-back layups after a 4-0 Bison run to keep the Tommies ahead. After the contest was evened up again, 24-24, two-straight threes from St. Thomas gave the team its biggest lead of the game at six points. Abby Mackenthun, a junior forward, got in on the scoring with a second quarter layup off an assist from Hill. Norling, continuing her successful shooting in the first half, hit a three-pointer from a Hill dime for her 14th point at the 1:03 mark.
Entering halftime, the Tommies led 35-26 over the Bison after a strong second quarter of shooting including a 3-4 spot on three-pointers from the Toms. St. Thomas was helped by strong offensive outputs from Norling and Hill in the first 20 minutes, as the two combined for 26 of the team's 25 first half points.
The Bison would roar back in the opening minutes of the third period, putting together a 10-2 scoring run against the Tommies. A Norling jumper halted the NDSU run and kept St. Thomas in front, 39-36. With the score at 39-38, Hill pushed the ball down the court after a Bison miss to find Norling in the corner for a three-pointer at the six-minute portion of the quarter. 30 seconds later, Norling hit on another three, this time off an assist from Porter. The Toms' lead would be extended to nine points on another Norling three, giving her 29 points at the 1:57 mark, and led to a Bison timeout.
St. Thomas led by 11 points at the beginning of the final quarter, 54-43. For the second-straight quarter, North Dakota State would chip away at the Tommie lead, tying the game at 56-56. Junior guard Jordyn Glynn found Hill for a three to put the Toms back on top, 59-56, at the 4:47 mark. Sophomore center Kate Burns found the basket for her fourth point of the game and gave UST a four-point lead. A Norling three-pointer gave the forward her collegiate career high in scoring, besting her previous output from NCAA Division II Wayne State (32 points at South Dakota School of Mines on Nov. 21, 2019).
Both teams were even on points off turnovers, 10-10. The Tommies excelled in the paint, scoring 32 of their 73 points inside the restricted zone. The Bison were held to just 22 points in the paint on Thursday. St. Thomas shot 46.6 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from deep, and 91.7 percent at the charity stripe in the victory.
"I'm so proud of our players," said head coach Ruth Sinn. "We had a lot of people playing out of position, but it wasn't about that, it was about how we play collectively and at our best. Great team win, I'm proud of them. We get everybody back tomorrow and we're excited to be a full team again."
The Tommies picked up their third-straight conference win, and will be back on the court on Saturday to take on North Dakota at 1:00 p.m.
