Bom-squad sends Women's Soccer past Wyoming
9/7/2021 7:08:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Coming off two recent road losses where it was outscored 3-0, Tommie Women's Soccer team was looking for an offensive spark in Tuesday's non-conference game with the University of Wyoming.
The Tommie CEO -- head coach Sheila McGill -- watched with joy as veteran Maddie Bomsta emerged as Tuesday's CIO -- Chief Ignition Officer.
Bomsta came off the bench and promptly ignited the offense. With the first-half clock dropping under 1:00, the Wayzata High grad delivered a highlight-reel goal from the right corner, a blast that slipped over the goalkeeper and inside the top left window. That goal broke a scoreless tie, and the Purple rode that wave to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Cowgirls at South Field.
Junior Jasmine Gates and senior Kristen Epperly converted second-half goals, and sophomore Olivia Graupmann added seven saves for the host Tommies (2-2-1).
St. Thomas erupted for a season-high three goals; posted its third shutout of the season; and extended its home unbeaten streak to 16 games (13-0-3) since early in the 2019 season.
St. Thomas had a 7-6 edge in corner kicks and a 14-9 advantage in shots on goal.
Both teams were grinding through a busy early schedule coming into Tuesday. Wyoming (3-2-1) tied at North Dakota State on Thursday and lost by shutout at the Minnesota Gophers on Sunday. St. Thomas lost 2-0 at UW-Green Bay on Thursday and lost 1-0 in overtime at Drake on Sunday.
Bomsta's tally was just her second career goal. Gates scored her first collegiate goal in the 58th minute on a breakaway. Epperly's header shot beat the keeper for a slick header goal in the 81st minute, the 10th goal of her career. The Toms are 9-0 in games when Epperly has contributed a goal, and eight of her scores have come at South Field. She also assisted on Bomsta's goal.
St. Thomas plays at Marquette next Sunday to start a five-game road swing.
