Women’s Hockey falls to Ohio State in historic Division I debut
9/24/2021 8:50:00 PM | Women's Hockey
The St. Thomas women's hockey team made its Division I and Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) debut with a 6-0 loss at the hands of No. 3 Ohio State.
"I was so excited and impressed with our team tonight," said Head Coach Joel Johnson. "The battle level and the way we competed was outstanding. We got lost a bit under pressure at the beginning of the second period but I have to give OSU a lot of credit. They pressured us all game and capitalized. We got outstanding goaltending tonight which was fun to watch, and I thought we generated some great scoring chances but just couldn't finish. I'm just so proud of our group and it was a privilege to be a part of such a special night for St. Thomas Women's Hockey."
The Tommies held the Buckeyes scoreless through the first period of action, but surrendered a pair of back-to-back goals in the opening minutes of the second period. The swarming Ohio State attack added a second paid of back-to-back goals later in the second period to take a 4-0 lead into the second intermission. The Buckeyes added two more goals to capture the 6-0 win.
Senior goalie Alexa Dobchuk registered 45 saves (.882 save percentage) and played all 60 minutes.
St. Thomas registered 16 shots on goal, including five Tommies who each posted two shots.
The Tommies and Buckeyes face off again tomorrow, with a 1 p.m. start (Minnesota time) at the Ohio State Ice Rink.
