Tommie Volleyball played its toughest opponent of the season Thursday night on the road at nearby Maturi Pavilion before an announced crowd of 5,356 and a Big Ten-plus streaming audience. The No. 11-ranked Minnesota Gophers pulled away from St. Thomas and claimed a 25-14, 25-8, 25-7 victory in its home Diet Coke Classic tournament.
Minnesota (4-3) has played five top-15 ranked teams in the early part of its schedule, including No. 1-ranked Texas. The Gophers hit .457 on Thursday's match and had 10 service aces to maintain control of the match.
Coach Thanh Pham knew his Tommies would see exceptional experience and talent across the net. His goal was to compete hard and find positives to build on as St. Thomas continues to prepare for its first season in the Summit League, which starts conference matches later this month.
Pham called Thursday's opportunity one more learning experience for his program, in year one of a transition from Division III to Division I. St. Thomas has six true freshmen getting extensive playing time so far this season.
Senior Fran Egan had seven kills and freshman Lauren Galvin recorded six kills for the Tommies (1-8). The Purple fell behind 11-2 in the first set before cutting the Minnesota lead to 15-10. The Gophers closed out the first set with a 5-1 run to win 25-14.
St. Thomas plays another Power-5 program on Friday evening back at the Maturi Pavilion, closing out its tourney schedule with a 5 p.m. match against Iowa State.
