Senior Burt Hedstrom is one of 15 players named to the elite Division III Men's Basketball Academic All-America team announced Wednesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The CoSIDA award for the Minnetonka, Minn., native is the 109th all-time received by Tommie student-athletes, and the first so far this school year. This is the 21st consecutive season St. Thomas has had a CoSIDA AAA recipient.
Hedstrom joins five other past St. Thomas men's hoops honorees, including current head coach Johnny Tauer, a 1995 Academic All-America recipient.
Hedstrom has a 3.97 grade-point average in Engineering. He was the recipient of the MIAC Elite 22 Award for men's hoops in 2019-20. Off the court, he worked a summer internship and was part of engineering team that is seeking a U.S. patent for an optical fiber fusion splice protector.
Hedstrom is planning to return for a fifth season as a graduate student in 2021-22 as the Tommies move into Division I and the Summit League.
He's started 36 games in a row, and played in all 91 career games. The shooting guard has recorded 710 points, 385 rebounds and 151 assists, and has converted at 41 percent from behind the arc while making 138 treys. He's also a 79 percent shooter at the foul line. The Toms are 29-5 in games on his career when he's scored in double figures.
He's helped the Tommies to a final D3Hoops.com poll finish of No. 4 in 2019-20 and No. 2 this winter, with an overall record of 71-20 in his era. That includes a 22-1 record over its last 23 games the program will play in Division III.
