Pitching helps Baseball grind out a road sweep

Senior RHP Andrew Tri ran his scoreless streak to 16 1-3 innings dating back to 2020 and Kyle Halverson's two-run homer in extra innings lifted St. Thomas Baseball to a 2-0 win over Northwestern-St. Paul in an eight-inning contest Saturday on the Eagles field in Roseville.
The Tommies rallied to win the nine-inning game 4-2 and take a doubleheader sweep.
Three relief pitchers threw five scoreless innings on the day to get both mound victories for St. Thomas (3-1).
T.J. Constertina came on with the winning run on second base and one out and got an inning-ending double-play line drive. He fanned the game's last two batters in a 1-2-3 eighth inning after Halverson's two-out home run in the top of the frame. That b;ast ended a run of 16 scoreless innings for St. Thomas.
In game two Sam Kulesa smacked an RBI triple in the fourth inning and a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth inning. Jake Porter drove in the Toms' other runs with a tying double in the sixth and an RBI grounder in the eighth. Charlie Bartholomew had a three-hit game in the nightcap.
Freshman Jack Blesch started in game two and pitched into the sixth inning. He allowed two runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
In four starts so far over the last two seasons, Tri is 3-0 with an 0.98 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 27.1 innings.
In game two, the Purple came back from a 2-1 deficit. Tyson Stritesky got five outs in middle relief and Graham Laubscher finished with two scoreless innings for the save.
In four games so far the Tomies have two shutouts and have allowed only five runs. St. Thomas pitchers have worked 32 innings with 49 strikeouts and just 14 walks.
The Toms are scheduled to play St. John's in two non-conference games Wednesday starting at noon at U.S. Bank Stadium.
