St. Thomas Men’s Basketball finesses its way past Crown College to earn its first home win of the 2021-22 schedule

12/2/2021 9:26:00 PM | Men's Basketball

St. Paul, Minn. – The St. Thomas Men's Basketball Team opened its 2021-22 home slate with a 73-53 win over Crown College behind an efficient effort on the hardwood.

"We were really excited to be back home in front of our fans, said Head Coach Dr. Johnny Tauer. "The energy in the gym was outstanding, I thought our guys played together on a night when we didn't shoot our best. I thought we got great sparks off the bench that provided energy and positivity. This is a special group that has been on the road the entire month of November, so coming home for the first of many home games was something the guys had looked forward to. We want to thank all of our fans for coming out and supporting."

In a three-point shooting first 10 minutes of the game, St. Thomas connected on five-of-10 of its shots from behind the arc. The Tommies first non-three-point basket came with 10:06 to play in the opening half, extending the Purple's lead to 20-10.

The Tommies took a 37-27 advantage into the locker room at halftime. St. Thomas connected on 14-of-31 (45 percent) of its shots from the field and eight-of-18 (44 percent) from behind the arc. Senior G Riley Miller netted a team-high 13 points in the first half and connected on four-of-six attempts from deep.

With 17:43 to play, Crown cut the St. Thomas lead to four points, 40-36, before the Tommies went on an 11-0 run, opening up a 51-36 advantage with 14:30 to play. The Purple committed only one second-half turnover as they outscored the Storm 36-26 in the closing frame.

Miller led the St. Thomas scoring efforts with 22 points behind a seven-of-13 (54 percent) shooting effort from behind the arc, accounting for 21-of-22 of Miller's points. Junior F Will Engels contributed 11 points, the only other Tommie to record double-digit points.

As a team, St. Thomas made 25-of-61 (41 percent) of its shots from the field, including a 15-of-40 (38 percent) showing from behind the arc. The Tommies dished out 16 assists and committed only five turnovers on the night.

The Tommies return to action on Saturday as they travel down I-35 to face Drake. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
