St. Paul, Minn. – St. Thomas Vice President, Director of Athletics Dr. Phil Esten announced Thursday that Matt Rachey has been named head coach of the men's golf program.
"I am thrilled to welcome Matt Rachey to the University of St. Thomas community," said Esten. "After engaging with many impressive and highly-qualified candidates, Coach Rachey stood out as exactly the right person to lead our men's golf team as we transition to Division I. Rachey's reputation of player development will be key in the team's transition to the Division I level, while his focus on character and culture will sustain success into the future."
Rachey, whom will be the program's first official head coach in St. Thomas' NCAA Division I-era, spent the last two seasons as the assistant coach of men's golf at Minnesota. Rachey assisted in the development and instruction of the team while leading two freshmen to All-Big Ten seasons. He also aided in the coaching of an All-American and a top 40 amateur in the world.
"I am extremely honored to be named the Men's Head Golf Coach at the University of St. Thomas," said Rachey. "I want to thank Phil Esten, Cory Chapman, and the rest of the UST administration for their belief in me and my vision for University of St. Thomas Golf."
"Ultimately, the University of St. Thomas's mission of comprehensive excellence in all areas of student-athlete life is very appealing. It is an exciting time at UST with the transition to Division I. I cannot wait to make history with these young men in the Summit League and to see the impact they will have on the Minnesota golf community. Roll Toms!"
Prior to joining the Gophers, he served as an assistant golf professional at the Minnesota Valley Golf Club in Bloomington, Minn., after holding the same position at the Minneapolis Golf Club. In addition, he ran his own business providing golf instruction for students from Waconia, Minn., and the surrounding area. Rachey has also worked as an assistant golf professional at Tonto Verde Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., and he was an associate teaching professional at Island View Golf Club in Waconia.
A four-year letter winner, Rachey played at Minnesota from 2013-17. He was a three-time All-Big Ten Academic honoree and twice was named the program's "Louis Lick" Hardest Worker Award Winner. Rachey appeared in five tournaments as a freshman for a team that would go on to win the Big Ten championship. His best finish came when he tied for sixth at the Barnabas Health Intercollegiate. The next year, he played in a career-high six tournaments for the Gophers. In his junior season, Rachey had a career-best finish when he claimed second at the St. John's Invitational. He posted three consecutive rounds under par, including a career-low 68, to finish at 6-under-par with a 208. Overall, he played in 16 tournaments during his career, including two during his senior campaign. He finished with a career scoring average of 75.73 with three rounds under par and two top-10 finishes.
A native of Waconia, Rachey graduated in 2017 from Minnesota's Carlson School of Management with a double-major in management information systems and finance.
