Brian Halonen scored 1:17 into overtime, his second goal of the game, to lead host Michigan Tech to a 4-3 win over St. Thomas in Saturday night's CCHA men's hockey game in Houghton, Mich. The win let the Huskies close out a weekend sweep.
The Tommies (1-19 overall, 1-13 CCHA) earned one point in the conference standings as they took their second 3-on-3 overtime loss of the CCHA season.
The disappointing ending denied St. Thomas after it played its best third period of the season and scored twice in the final four minutes to tie the game.
Christiano Versich scored two extra-attacker goals for the Purple in the final 3:12 of regulation time to erase a 3-1 Tech lead. Versich scored at 16:48 and found the back of the net again at 19:29 to close with a three-point game. Kyler Grundy scored the first Tommie goal, in period two, then assisted on the last two scores.
Jacob Berger recorded 38 saves in goals. The third-place Huskies (10-7, 7-5), who are receiving votes in the top-20 national poll, outshot the Tommies 42-19.
St. Thomas gets a four-week break for final exams and the holiday and return in January and February to play their final 14 regular-season contests.
