11/26/2021 4:08:00 PM | Women's Basketball
San Luis Obispo, Calif. – A late scoring burst helped lead Cal Poly (1-2) past St. Thomas (1-4), 63-51, on the opening day of the Holiday Beach Classic. The Tommies led by nine points early in the third quarter before the Mustangs rallied back on Friday afternoon.
Graduate forward Erin Norling led the team with a NCAA Division I career-high 16 points on 5-16 (31.3 percent) shooting from the field and 2-7 (28.6 percent) shooting from beyond the arc. Teammates Jade Hill, a freshman guard, and Kaia Porter, a graduate forward, finished just shy of double-digit scoring with nine and eight points, respectively. Guard Jordyn Glenn totaled a season-best output on the boards with 11 rebounds, four of which were on the offensive end.
After trailing, 5-0, early in the opening quarter, an 8-0 run highlighted by a layup from senior Maggie Negaard and a midrange jumper drilled by Hill put the Tommies up by three points. A span of St. Thomas turnovers allowed the Cal Poly offense to accumulate a 7-0 scoring stretch of its own. Glynn fit an inside pass to center Kate Burns off of a Mustangs turnover to put the Tommies back on top, 14-12, at the 1:05 mark of the first period.
Entering the second quarter media timeout, St. Thomas held a two-point advantage at 18-16, after four made free throws from Hill in the first five minutes of the period. Entering the game, Hill was shooting 12-17 (70.6 percent) from the charity stripe, while the team was 35-50 (70.0 percent) on the free throw attempts. The Tommie lead was extended to as high as four points after a Porter three-pointer on a Negaard assist. At the halfway mark of the game, St. Thomas trailed Cal Poly, 24-23, while shooting 22.2 percent from the field and 13.3 percent from deep.
The first 10 points of the third quarter were scored by the Tommies, seven of which came from Norling. A timely timeout called by the Mustangs kicked off a 13-0 run for the opposing team to go up 37-33 on St. Thomas. Norling finished with 11 points in the period after draining a pair of threes.
Trailing at the end of the fourth, the St. Thomas offense built a 9-0 run in part due to a three-pointer from freshman forward Jordyn Lamker on a Phoebe Frentzel. Cal Poly scored at a highly efficient rate of 58.6 percent on all shot attempts in the last 20 minutes of the game, which included a 64.3 percent shooting effort in the final quarter.
