Men's Basketball flies high with Lindberg to another victory

Fifth-year guard Ryan Lindberg sank 8-of-10 attempts from 3-point range and matched his collegiate high with 24 points to lead Tommie Men's Basketball (3-3) past the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Cougars (2-4) Sunday in play at the Youngstown (Ohio) State tournament.

St. Thomas went 2-1 in the three-day tourney losing by four to host Youngstown on Friday then and posting double-digit wins over Niagara and SIUE.
Coach John Tauer's Tommies got all 86 points on Sunday from their starting five. They had only 10 turnovers, shot 50 percent from the field while converting 16-of-19 foul shots.

Lindberg's points all came in the first half. Three other seniors continued their strong play: Riley Miller sank 5-of 12 from behind the arc and 9-of-9 free throws for 24 points; Anders Nelson made 6-of-6 at the line and closed with 13 points; and Parker Bjorklund finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.

With three double-digit wins and three losses by a total of 15 points, Tauer is pleased the way his team continues to battle and exceed outside expectations early in its first Division I season.

"I'm just really proud of the guys," Tauer said postgame on Skor North AM 1500. "To go back-to-back-to-back games since Friday and to get better every day, says a lot about our guys.

"When you think about the six games we've had and the short (turnaround), all on the road, I can't say enough about our guys to be making this jump (into D-I), this historic transition and to do it with the excitement and toughness they have demonstrated. It makes me really proud to be their coach. Their spirit and competitive joy really makes you pinch yourself and (appreciate) that you get to coach them.

"Today I thought our guys played with a certain toughness against a team that's very physical -- they rebound well, and they pressure you. But our guys came out and shared the ball. Ryan Lindberg had 24 points in the first half, which was unbelievable. I think what embodies our team the most is that (Ryan) didn't take a shot in the second half.  I joked with him that I would have thinking at halftime that I'm going for 40 tonight. He didn't take a shot, and that's how our guys play. They really don't care who scores the points, who gets the credit, it was just a really good team win."

Lindberg is shooting 62 percent from 3-point range (23-of-37) in his first six D-I contests, all away from home.

"Ryan came out of high school with a reputation as a shooter," Tauer said, but he has turned himself into an unbelievable all-around player. He has our best assist-to-turnover issue. We have a lot of guys like him who are skilled and unselfish."

St. Thomas plays Nov. 27 at Seattle University in its first D-I venture westward.
