St. Thomas Football rattles off 40 unanswered points against Presbyterian to finish season 7-3 with a 54-15 win on Senior Day

11/20/2021 5:30:00 PM | Football

St. Paul, Minn. – The St. Thomas Football finished its season 7-3 overall with a 6-2 Pioneer Football League record in its inaugural Division I season with a 54-15 win over Presbyterian on Saturday on Saturday to extend its regular season home winning streak to 31, including a perfect 23-0 career home record for the seniors that were celebrated today.

"The pride that I have in our seniors is difficult to put into words," said Head Coach Glenn Caruso. "It's a group that's seen a lot, these 23 guys, they've come to us in many different ways, some high school, and four years, some five years, some are graduate students. They were there when (Coach Caruso's wife) Racheal (Caruso) shared the news about her battle with cancer in the family – they were freshmen. They were there when teams didn't want to play us. They were there when we didn't have a league, they were there when we didn't have a division. They have served each other and this program very well."

St. Thomas scored first, just over four minutes in the ball game and Presbyterian answered and had a successful two-point conversion to open up an 8-7 lead at the end of the first quarter – that's when things started getting interesting.

Three seconds into the second quarter, sophomore RB Hope Adebayo plunged into the endzone to regain the lead, 14-8. With 9:10 to play in the first half, the Blue Hose capped off 13-play, 71-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to regain the lead 15-14.

The Tommies rattled off 40 unanswered points by way of scores from senior RB Nick Rice, a 40-yard touchdown run, a 27-yard pick-six from senior DB Luke Glenna, Adebayo's second touchdown run, a 9-yard rush from senior RB Tom Loeffler, an 8-yard rush from freshman QB Branden Smith and a 2-yard touchdown strike from senior RB Wyatt Draper.

St. Thomas recorded 227 rushing yards and averaged 5.4 rushing yards per carry with seven touchdowns on the ground. The Tommies also aired it out for 209 passing yards, while completing 12-of-21 passing attempts. On the afternoon, the Purple tallied 436 yards on offense.

The league's leading defense continued its dominance, led by senior DB Joe Hird who posted two interceptions and returned them 43 yards. In addition to Hird's two interceptions and Glenna's pick-six, freshman DB Yusef Leak added an interception in the contest as well. Senior DB Nick Ektanitphong led the team with 10 total tackles, including five solo stops.

St. Thomas finished its first season in the Pioneer Football League third in the standings, trailing only Davidson and San Diego, both of which handed the Purple their only two conference losses. The third loss of the season came at the hands of Northern Iowa, and FCS powerhouse that spent most of the season ranked in the top-25 nationally.
