Brynne brings it, Women's Hoops takes close win

Sophomore center Brynne Rolland scored a career-high 30 points and grabbed nine rebounds as No. 22-ranked Tommie Women's Basketball held off a fourth-quarter Carleton comeback try to win 63-59 in Wednesday night's MIAC contest at Schoenecker Arena.
Rolland iced the victory as she sank both free-throw tries twice in the closing seconds after the Knights climbed within two points -- with :16 to play, and again with :06 to go.
Near the halfway point in the 20-game MIAC race, the Tommies (11-3 overall, 7-2 MIAC) moved into a tie for third place in the conference standings with Gustavus' loss at Concordia. The Toms are 4-0 in January.
The game was tied 25-25 midway through the second quarter, but the Toms finished the first half on a 14-1 run for a 39-26 advantage. A 6-0 run to start the third period pushed the lead to 19.
Carleton chipped away and capped a 16-4 run to climb within 59-57 with 18 seconds to play on Katie Chavez' three made free throws. After Rolland was fouled and sank two shots to push the lead to 61-57, Carleton's Jill Yanai made a layup to cut the lead to 61-59.
Rolland was fouled with six seconds to go and converted two clinching free throws.
St. Thomas had a 37-22 rebounding edge, and made 17-of-22 at the foul line. Macy Hatlestad added eight points, six rebounds and three assists.
Chavez scored 15 to lead the Knights.
The Toms play Saturday afternoon at St. Mary's.
