Paige's goal sends Women's Soccer to upset of No. 3-ranked Bears

No. 19-ranked Tommie Women's Soccer used Paige Cater's sudden-death goal in the game's 111th minute to stun No. 3-ranked Washington (Mo.), 1-0, in two overtimes Saturday in St. Louis.
Sarah Pasternak had 12 saves including some clutch plays for the Tommies (2-0), who pulled off the program's top road victory of the last 20 years.
The Bears -- a Final Four team in 2018 with a 21-1 final record -- lost just their second home game in five seasons and had a 15-game home win streak snapped.
The Bears had an 8-2 edge in corner kicks and a 12-7 advantage in shots on goal but took a rare home shutout loss.
Cater scored her first goal of the season off a feed from Kaley Roberts.
"It was a huge road win for us against a very talented Wash U. team," Coach Sheila McGill said. "We used the depth of our bench to help keep the pace high, and stayed organized defensively. came out strong in the first half and created some great chances. In the second half we struggled a bit but really fought hard in overtime.
"Kaley Roberts received the pass and played it off to Cater, who never slowed down. She took the shot from 20 yards out and hit the crossbar and slid in for a goal."
The Toms close out the St. Louis trip Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against Fontbonne.
