Men's Hockey falls 4-1 at home to Johnnies

Host St. Thomas allowed two second-period goals in a 1:43 span and never led in Friday night's 4-1 home loss to St. John's in MIAC men's hockey play in Mendota Heights.

Brett Gravelle's third-period goal gave the Tommies life with under 13:00 remaining to cut the SJU lead to 3-1. But the Toms never got closer and allowed an empty-net tally in the final 40 seconds.

St. Thomas (13-4-5 overall, 7-2-5 MIAC) had a 13-game unbeaten streak halted. Andrew Lindgren made 33 saves for the Johnnies, who took five points on the weekend series with a tie and shootout win on Thursday night.

It also marked the first loss of the 2019 calendar year for any of the four St. Thomas basketball and hockey teams. Those four are now a combined 41-1-5 in January and February competition.

Gravelle has scored a point in 13 of the last 14 games for St. Thomas.

The Tommies were eliminated from the championship race Friday. They close the regular season with games next Friday at Hamline and a Feb. 16 home game agauinst the Pipers. They will be either the No. 2, 3 or 4 seed in the five-team conference playoffs.
