Softball gets hard-fought sweep of Blazers

Melissa Barry had four hits and three RBI on the day as No. 14-ranked St. Thomas Softball recorded two hard-fought, comeback wins over St. Benedict in MIAC play Saturday at the Providence Academy Dome in Plymouth, Minn. UST needed eight innings to take game one, 6-3, and held on for a 6-5 victory in game two.
Sophomore Hayley Dunning (9-2) pitched into the eighth inning and allowed two earned runs for the game-one pitching win. Isabelle Marketon posted saves in each game, stranding two runners in game one. Sammy Hogan allowed five runs over six innings to get the pitching win in game two.
With the score tied 3-3 in game one, the Toms scored three runs after two were out in the top of the eighth inning. Sam Birlig reached on an error, and Jenna Beeso sinled. With two out, Hogan walked to load the bases. Barry was hit by pitch to force home a run, and Jenna Bromen made to 6-3 with a two-run single.
Barry went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs in game two.
St. Thomas (13-5 overall, 3-1 MIAC) had split a Thursday night twinbill with Bethel at the Providence Dome, winning 9-1 and losing 4-3.
The Blazers took a 3-0 first-inning lead on Emilie Antony's three-run homer in game two.
Coach John Tschida's team is also scheduled to play indoors in Dundas, Minn., Sunday at 7:30 p.m. against St. Olaf.
