Men's Soccer rebounds, tops Johnnies
10/2/2018 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
Senior Andrew Stuempfig scored in the 25th minute and freshman Jack Barry tallied what proved to be the game winner in the 45th minute as St. Thomas Men's Soccer held on for a 2-1 MIAC victory over St. John's Tuesday at South Field.
The Tommies (7-2-1 overall, 3-1-1 MIAC) rebounded from Saturday's 3-1 home loss to Macalester. They are among five teams with no losses or one MIAC loss at the halfway point of the 10-game conference season.
St. John's (6-2, 3-2) fell behind 2-0 but applied pressure throughout the second half. Thomas Bell scored in the 56th minute to trim the deficit to 2-1. In the final stretch, SJU had a potential tying shot carom off the crossbar and sail high, then had a strong chance from just outside the top of the box on a laser shot that UST senior Aidan Hogan smothered for a save.
Stuempfig's goal was just his second in 31 career games. Barry now has five goals in his first 10 collegiate games.
The Toms play Saturday afternoon at Carleton, and return home Sunday to face Carthage (Wis.).
