Softball needs 10 innings to outlast Hamline
5/6/2016 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Freshman Kierstin Anderson-Glass pitched all 10 innings and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning on Chase Shortly's walk-off RBI single Friday as No. 12-ranked St. Thomas edged Hamline, 3-2, in the opening game of the four-team MIAC Softball tournament.
The double-elimination event continues with three games on Saturday and a championship game -- or two if needed -- on Sunday, all at UST's South Field.
St. Thomas (36-5) improved to 13-0 all-time in conference playoff openers. The Tommies will play a winners' bracket game Saturday at 11 a.m. against No. 25-ranked St. Catherine, a 4-2 winner over Gustavus. That winner moves on to Sunday's finals.
The Gusties and Hamline play a 1:30 p.m. elimination game.
On a hot, windy day that saw temperatures push 90 degrees, the Toms and Pipers couldn't finish chances on offense. Hamline left 13 runners on base in 10 innings, including a runner placed on second in the final inning per international tie-break rules.
St. Thomas also left 13 runners but converted in its 10th-inning chance. Anderson-Glass was placed on second. After an intentional walk and two fly outs, Shortly lined a hard grounder up the middle to center field and Anderson-Glass was able to score the winning run from second while running on the contact.
Anderson-Glass (24-4) struck out 10 and walked two in her first collegiate postseason start. She survived a shaky early stretch as seven of the first 12 Piper batters reached base in building a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
But the UST hurler got a bases-loaded strikeout to close the second, and went on to set down 25 of the last 32 batters she faced, including eight shutout innings from the third through the 10th.
Sarah DeMars picthed all 9 2-3 innings and allowed just two earned runs for the Pipers (25-16).
Dana Connelly's RBI single with out in the fourth pulled the Toms within 2-1. Katie Jo Delisle's two-out single in the seventh inning tied the game at 2-2.
Melissa Barry had three hits, and Delisle, Shortly and Connelly each had two hits. Micaela Trainor had a hit and two walks.
Notes
The losers of the Friday games will play an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon with the winner advancing to play another elimination test at 4 p.m. against the loser of the 11 a.m. game. The winner of that game earns the final spot in the championship.
The championship game is set for 11 a.m. on Sunday morning, with a 1 p.m. game to follow if neither team has lost twice.
