Sun Wrap: Softball, Baseball get sweeps on Sunday

Freshman Kierstin Anderson-Glass threw a one-hit shutout and was 3-for-3 at the plate to lead No. 23-ranked St. Thomas Softball to a 7-0 victory in Sunday's first game against UW-Stout on UST's South Field.
Anderson-Glass got the final five outs in game two for a save as UST (15-3) scored a 3-2 victory to close out the sweep of Stout (8-8). St. Thomas has won 13 consecutive games.
In game one, Brenna Walek hit a two-run homer and a double. Micaela Trainor also had two hits for the Tommies. Walek has four home runs on the season and 27 on her career.
Anderson-Glass (10-2) walked just one and struck out seven in the opener, and recorded her sixth shutout of 2016. She took a no-hitter into the final inning, but Beth Wood slapped a bloop single to center for the Blue Devils' only hit.
In game two, Katie Jo Delisle started and pitched into the fifth inning and allowed one earned run and one walk. Jessica Eppenberger got through a jam in the fifth and started the sixth and took the win. Anderson-Glass froze a runner in scoring position in the sixth and got the final five outs, ending the game with a pop out with the tying run on first base.
Megan DuPuis' RBI single tied the game for UST in the fourth inning. The eventual winnign run was plated in the fifth innings as Trainor was hit by a pitch, stole second, was bunted to third base and scored sliding under a tag on home on Heather Kascht's squeeze bunt.
The Tommies play two conference games Wednesday at Augsburg (3:30 p.m.).
Baseball
Senior Eric Veglahn threw a complete-game four-hitter as No. 21-ranked St. Thomas Baseball scored a 4-1 win over St. Mary's in the MIAC opener Sunday in Winona.
The Tommies (9-3 overall, 2-0 MIAC) closed out the sweep with a 10-3 victory in game two. UST slapped 28 hits on the day, including 19 in the nightcap.
UST's Ryan Zimmerman came in to pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth inning and UST leading 6-1 with one out. He allowed just one run and stranded the bases full. Zimmerman took the win as he allowed six hits, one walk an one run with three Ks in 4 2-3 innings.
In the opener, Veglahn struck out nine and didn't walk a batter as he improved to 21-1 on his career. He's 3-0 with one save this season.
Waylon Bemboom had three hits and scored two in game one. Brady Johnson had an RBI double; Cory Quinlan had an RBI ground out; Ben Waltz added an RBI single; and Zach Gottfredsen had an RBI double.
In game two, Waltz, Dan Ziemann and Quinlan each had three hits. On the day, Bemboom went 5-for-9 to raise his average to .458, and Waltz was 4-for-5. Waltz is 9-for-16 wit six RBI in his last five games.
Jake Smith was 3-for-7 with an RBI.
Gottfredson snapped out of a four-game slump that closed his Florida trip and went 4-for-7 on the day with a walk and a home run.
St. Thomas opens its home season Wed. April 6 against Augsburg with a 2:30 p.m. conference doubleheader. The Auggies scored 32 runs and swept preseason favorite Bethel on the road on Sunday.
Women's Track & Field
The Tommie Women's Track and Field team won the 4x400 relay to highlight Sunday's performances at the Hamline Invite. No team scores were kept. UST had eight top-six placings.
UST won the 4x400 in 4:02.67 with Mallory Adamson, Summer Ellefson, Ali Glassbrenner and Hannah Helstad.
Libby Lange placed second in the shot put (38-11 3-4).
In the 400 hurdles, Ellefson (65.59) and Helstad (66.70) placed 2-3 and Hanna Gribble was 14th (1:12.30) in a field of 21 entrants.
Adamson placed fourth (60.20) and Glassbrenner was 15th (63.01) out of 31 in the 400 dash.
Megan Terukina placed sixth (2:16.79), Jenny Walz was 11th (2:22.79) and Christine Rohlf placed 13th (2:24.75) out of 61 in the 800.
Bailey Cook placed eighth (15.53) and Laura Eischens took 14th (16.04) in the 100 hurdles in a field of 29 hurdlers. Eischens also placed eighth in the shot put (35-5 1-4) and fourth in the javelin (123-9).
UST's 4x100 relay team of Megan Maki, Madeline Davis, Cook and Katie Murray placed fourth in 51.52.
Cook and Sidney Severson tied for fifth place in the high jump at 4-11.
In the discus, Genevieve Gates placed fifth (113-6) and Olivia Graham placed 10 th (104-9). In the hammer, Allison Mellin (134-2) and Graham (133-3) placed 7-8. Graham also placed eighth in the javelin (108-3).
Kendall Novak placed ninth in the pole vault in 9-6 1-4.
Gribble placed 15th in the long jump (14-10 3-4).
Elizabeth Russell placed ninth in the triple jump (32-4 1-4).
Men's Track & Field
Anthony Ekholm placed second out of 43 in the 100 dash (11.13) and second out of 45 in the 200 dash (22.57) to lead the Tommie Men's Track and Field team at Sunday's Hamline Invite. UST had eight top-four places.
Evan Cross won the long jump (21-8 3-4) in a field of 28 jumpers. Preston Huddleston took eighth (19-11) and Thomas Gorilla placed 14 th (19-3 1-4).
UST's 4x100 relay of Joe Reed, Cole Boughner, Sean Murphy and Conor White placed second in 43.05.
In the shot put in a field of 49 throwers, Matt Schauer was second (52-8 3-4) and Micah Hausman took ninth (46-8 1-4).
Hausman (fifth, 134-10) and Craig Murtha (10 th, 129-4) also placed in the discus in a field of 48 entrants.
Hausman (160-9), Logan Klaers (150-2) and Murtha (148-2) placed 4-9-11 out of 59 entrants in the hammer.
In the javelin, Cole Boughner (163-1) and Jeremiah Thayer (154-6) placed 3-8 in a field of 38. Boughner also took 11 th on the 100 dash (11.43).
In the pole vault, Connor O'Neill placed third (14-11) and Evan Keil took eighth (13-11 1-4).
In the 400, Ryan Queenan (50.55), James Skidmore (50.62) and Ryan Trapp (51.51) placed 6-7-14 in a field of 53.
Casey Halbmaier placed 10 th in the 800 (1:59.56) and Charlie Jones took 14 th (2:01.09) out of 60 runners.
Tyler Krpan placed seventh in the 1,500 (4:05.63) in a field of 64.
Jacob Gerhartz (15:07.18) and Dylan Baumann (15:29.58) placed 8-10 in the 5,000 out of 53 runners.
In the 110 hurdles, Duncan Dahl (16:15), O'Neill (16.24) and Nick Hasler (16.41) placed 8-9-13 in a field of 24. Dahl (58.82) and Antonio Erskin (59.55) placed 8-11 in the 400 hurdles.
Matt Anderson was sixth in the high jump (5-8 3-4).
In the triple jump, John Klun (41-3 1-4) and Luke VanZuilen (40-2 1-4) placed 7-11.
