Sat. Wrap: Baseball, SB, M. Tennis go 5-0 on day

4/16/2016 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

Saturday was another successful day on the diamonds for St. Thomas Baseball and Softball, with each taking two home wins over conference opponents to stay atop the MIAC standings.

Men's Tennis pulled out a close victory at Bethel to run its win streak to nine.

St. Thomas Track and Field also had some strong performances at the Holst Invitational at Concordia-St. Paul.

Baseball

No. 15-ranked Tommie Baseball (17-3 overall, 10-0 MIAC) slapped 31 hits, including seven home runs, in Saturday's 11-1 and 21-3 home sweep of Macalester. A rare southeast wind was blowing out at Koch Diamond and the UST hitters more than doubled the season HR total as they started the day with five and now reached 12.

Eric Veglahn threw a four hitter with four strikeouts and no walks to get a complete-game win in the opener. He is 4-0 on the season and 22-1 on his career. Veglahn continues to lead all NCAA pitchers at all three levels in K-to-walk ratio with 48 strikeouts and just one walk in 41 innings this season.

In game two, Dominic Reed pitched into the sixth inning and won his second start in seven days.

Waylon Bemboom ran his hitting streak to 14 games and Jake Smith made it 17 games in a row with a hit or walk. Smith made a run at a cycle in game two as he went 3-for-3 with two walks and four RBI with a two-run homer, a triple and a single. Bemboom also went 3-for-3 with four RBI in the nightcap.

In game one, Brady Johnson (3-for-3, three RBI), Zach Gottfredsen (3-for-4) and Chad Clute (HR, 2B) each had round trippers. In game two, Bemboom and Jake Steinbach each hit grand slams and Smith and Johnson also homered.

The Tommies have two mid-week doubleheaders: Tuesday at UW-Stout, and Wednesday at home against No. 12-ranked UW-LaCrosse.

Softball

No. 15-ranked Tommie Softball (24-4, 11-1) got just 10 hits on the day from nine different players but it rode strong pitching to a 8-0, 3-2 home sweep of Concordia-Moorhead at South Field.

Freshman Kierstin Anderson-Glass took both pitching wins as she retired 27 of the 29 Cobbers she faced on the day over nine scoreless innings. She allowed one single and a batter who reached on a dropped third strike.

Anderson-Glass struck out 18 and walked none while allowing just the one hit. She started and threw five shutout innings in game one, and later took the win in relief in game two with four scoreless innings.

UST broke a 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth in game two as Micaela Trainor was hit by pitch, took third on a throwing error, and scored on Rachel Suter's sac fly.

The Tommies, who maintained  two-game lead over Gustavus and St. Catherine, play two Sunday at Carleton (1 p.m.).

Men's Tennis

Tommie Men's Tennis (9-2) made it nine wins in a row with Saturday's hard-fought 6-3 victory at Bethel.

Luke Elifson and Allen-Michael Muench each went 2-0 on the day, including third-set tiebreaker wins in their singles contests at Nos. 1-5, respectively. Burke Anderson and Ben Wait responded with straight-set singles victories after dropping their doubles match.
