Women's basketball jumps out early, wins ninth straight

ST. PAUL – The St. Thomas women's basketball team jumped out to a 21-4 lead in the first quarter on the way to a 67-45 win over Augsburg College on Wednesday night at Schoenecker Arena.
Three players scored in double figures for the Tommies, led by senior Katie Stone who scored 16 points thanks to four three-pointers.
With the win, St. Thomas improves to 19-3 overall and 13-2 in the MIAC to take over sole possession of first place in the conference standings. Augsburg drops to 12-10 overall and 7-8 in league play.
The Tommies came out firing from the start, opening up the contest on a 9-0 run thanks to three straight three-pointers, two from Stone and one from Lucia Renikoff.
Augsburg came back to score four straight points, but was unable to do anything more as St. Thomas soared on to finish the quarter on a 12-0 scoring run over the final 5:10 of the frame.
St. Thomas made four three-pointers in the first quarter and picked up right where it left off in the second. On its first possession of the second quarter, Lauren Fischer nailed a trey to extend the lead to 24-4 just 34 seconds into the frame.
From there, it was all Tommies. They led by as many as 23 points (31-8) in the second quarter on the way to a 36-19 lead at halftime.
The Auggies cut the lead to as little as 12 points (42-30) thanks to a 9-4 run midway through the third quarter, but they could not sustain as St. Thomas sped off on a 10-1 run to finish the quarter and take a 52-31 lead to the fourth. From there, the Tommies held on to seal the 22-point win.
St. Thomas shot greater than 50-percent for the sixth time this season, shooting 51.1-percent (23-45) from the field. The Tommies also shot 45.5-percent (10-22) from three-point range. Augsburg shot 41.3-percent (19-46) from the field and 25-percent (2-8) from deep.
St. Thomas grabbed 32 rebounds compared to 21 for Augsburg. The Tommies also outscored the Auggies 27-13 in points off turnovers.
Stone led the way with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and 4-of-9 from three. Kaitlin Langer followed with another double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds. Lauren Fischer was the final Tommie to score in double figures with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including a 3-of-4 mark from downtown.
Hannah Steinhaus was the only Auggie to score in double digits with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field.
St. Thomas will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Arden Hills, Minn., to take on Bethel at 3:00 pm.
