Sat. wrap: WBB holds on, Hockey has mixed day

St. Thomas won in women's basketball and lost in women's hockey on Saturday afternoon.
The No. 5-ranked Tommie men's basketball team (12-1 MIAC) was idle but saw it's MIAC lead expand to four games on the loss column. St. John's and Carleton lost and joined a large group in second place, all with five conference defeats.
On Saturday at 7 p.m., in Mendota Heights, St. John's and St. Thomas tied in men's hockey 2-2. The Johnnies won the shootout 4-3 so each team took three points on the weekend. The teams have tied all three meetings this season, and six of the last seven games between these programs have ended in a tie or one-goal decision.
The Tommies dropped four points behind first-place Augsburg with six games to play as the Auggies swept St. Mary's on the weekend.
Women's Basketball
Junior center Kaitlin Langer had 27 points and 17 rebounds and keyed a game-closing 12-2 run as No. 12-ranked St. Thomas outlasted neighborhood rival St. Catherine, 72-67, in MIAC women's basketball play Saturday at Schoenecker Arena.
The Tommies (16-3 overall, 10-2 MIAC) have won six in a row and avenged one of their three season defeats. They maintain a share of the MIAC lead with St. Mary's, one game ahead of Concordia and Gustavus.
The Toms shot 52 percent in the second half (13-of-25) and used a 48-28 rebounding advantage to help offset 18 turnovers.
The Wildcats (9-9, 4-8) took a 65-60 lead with 3:11 left on LaShay Holt's 3-point basket. But Lauren Fischer's trey and two Langer inside baskets put the Toms ahead to stay at 67-65.
Paige Gernes (3-of-4) and Langer (2-of-2) helped ice the game at the foul line in the final 25 seconds, and the UST defense stopped SCU on five of its last six possessions.
UST's Katie Stone had 14 points while Fischer added nine points and eight rebounds.
Women's Hockey
UST fell behind 3-0 and lost 5-3 in women's hockey Saturday at St. Ben's. The No. 4-ranked Toms went 0-3 in a four-day span this week including 3-2 and 5-3 losses to the Blazers.
Track and Field
In track and field, All-America Emily Gapinski clocked 4:57 for the mile to take third at the U of M Gopher Jack Johnson Invite. It's the fastest mile time in Division III thus far this season.
On the men's side, Matt Schauer in the shot put (53-5 1-2) and Michael Witschen in the long jump (22-2 1-4) had good performances at the UW-River Falls Invite.s scored 172 points to top second-place UW-River Falls (155).
