Women's basketball rolls to big win

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Thomas women's basketball team rolled to an 86-39 win over Carleton College on Saturday afternoon at West Gym. The Tommies opened the game with a 12-2 run on the way to building a 26-9 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in the victory.
Sophomore Maddie Wolkow came off the bench to score 16 points and lead all scorers in the game, as St. Thomas improves to 14-3 overall and 8-2 in the MIAC. Carleton falls to 4-13 overall and 1-9 in league play.
St. Thomas came out firing on Saturday, rattling off a 12-2 run to open the game. The run included four three-pointers as the Tommies opened the game a red-hot 4-for-5 from deep.
The Knights came back with a 7-2 run of their own to cut the lead to 14-9, but St. Thomas responded by scoring the last 12 points of the quarter on its way to opening up a 17-point lead after the first 10 minutes.
From there, it was all Tommies. St. Thomas went on to outscore the Knights 26-13 in the second quarter to take a 52-22 lead to halftime.
The second half continued the script of the first, as the Tommie women outscored Carleton 21-6 in the third quarter and 13-11 in the fourth to walk away with the 47-point win in a game which they never trailed.
St. Thomas shot 42.4-percent (28-66) from the field and made a season-high 16 threes. In turn, the Tommies held Carleton to just 31.4-percent (16-51) shooting from the field and 20-percent (2-10) from long range.
The Tommies outrebounded the Knights 45-30, committed just seven turnovers to Carleton's 16, which led to a 22-3 advantage in points of turnovers, and St. Thomas' bench outscored Carleton's 52-11.
Wolkow led all scorers with 16 points off the bench on 5-of-6 shooting, including a 4-of-5 mark from downtown. Lauren Fischer followed with 12 points, while Morganne Gruber collected a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Katie Stone was the final Tommie in double figures with 11 points.
Michele Arima was the only Knight to score in double figures. Arima scored 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Kayla Frank led the team in rebounding with four boards.
St. Thomas will be back in action on Wednesday night when it hosts Macalester at 7:00 pm.
