Freshman Morgan McCorkle took second in a field of 54 players to lead Tommie women's golf to a final-round score of 319 on Sunday, good for a one-stroke victory at the nine-team Carleton Spring Invite.
The Tommies opened with a 324 on Saturday and trailed host Carleton by one shot to start Sunday. UST (643), Carleton (644), Gustavus (647) and UW-Stout (652) took the first four team spots.
It's the first team tournament victory of 2014-15 for St. Thomas, which recorded three consecutive runner-up finishes last September and later took third at the MIAC Championships.
McCorkle, who had the best score among 43 MIAC players, shot 76-78/154. Both rounds were her collegiate bests. Her best previous score in her first 15 rounds was 79, and she placed 31st at the MIAC Championships last fall.
Freshman Emily Thul tied for third after shooting 79-76/155.
Three other UST players finished in the top 30: Sophie Tuttle (84-83/167), Erin Dingmann (85-83/168) and Rachel Morris (88-82/170).
The Tommies are scheduled to play next weekend, May 2-3, at the UW-Eau Claire Invite.
