Baseball completes sweep of Macalester

Junior Brady Johnson had six hits and seven runs on the douboleheder to lead No. 8-ranked St. Thomas in MIAC baseball road action at Macalester.
UST won game one, 10-5, on Wednesday, and finished game two with a 22-9 victory. The latter was completed with 1 1-2 innings on Thursday after lightning halted play the day before.
It was a hitters' day at the park with wind gusts of 30-plus mph blowing out from home plate.
With 32 hits and 32 runs in the doubleheader, the Tommies (11-5 overall, 3-1 MIAC) saw their team batting average rise 20 points to .335 on the season.
Freshman Hunter Hart was 4-for-5 with four RBI and three walks on the day to lift his season average to .459. Freshman Jake Smith was 4-for-8 and reached seven times on the day, scoring six runs. His two-run homer in the last inning of game one added two insurance runs.
Keller Knoll, Zach Gottfredsen and Cory Quinlan each had three hits on the day.
Five UST pitchers recorded 20 strikeouts in the two games. The Tommie defense committed just one error in 14 innings.
Freshman reliever Drew Molin worked 1 2-3 innings to get the victory in game one. Sophomore Bill Ferderer got the final six outs and recorded his second save in three days.
Tyler Feyereisen worked the first four innings of the nightcap for the victory. He struck out seven but allowed eight hits and eight runs.
The Toms are scheduled to play Saturday against Hamline in two road games at the Universoty of Minnesota (noon start.)
