Walkoff HR helps Softball in split

Junor Danielle Tschann's walkoff solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted No. 12-ranked St. Thomas to a 10-9 win over Bethel in game one of Saturday's MIAC softball doubleheader at UST's South Field.
The Royals came back to take a split with a 7-2 victory in game two. Caroline Kivisto had six hits on the day to lead Bethel (10-8 overall, 1-1 MIAC).
UST (17-3, 1-1) saw its 9-3 lead erased in the opener as a four-run sixth inning tied the game at 9-9. Leftfielder Kendra Bowe threw out a runner at home plate trying to score at home to save one other run.
Tschann hit her second career home run to end the contest. Micaela Trainor's three-run homer helped the Toms build the lead, and McKensie Wergin had three hits.
In game two, BU's Lindsay Edeen had a complete-game win as she allowed seven hits, one walk and two runs. Bethel broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap, aided by two hit by pitch, a walk, a fielding error, and a bases-loaded wild pitch.
On the day, Wergin had four hits; Annie Boyer and Bianca Peterson each went 3-for-6; and Trainor drove in four runs.
St. Thomas is scheduled to play road doubleheaders Monday at St. Ben's; Tuesday at Concordia-Moorhead; and Thursday at Hamline.
