Softball splits with Saint Ben's, now 18-4 overall

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – For the second straight MIAC series, the St. Thomas softball team split a doubleheader, this time with Saint Benedict on Monday afternoon in central Minnesota. The Tommies fell victim to a walk off single in game one, falling 2-1 before capturing an 8-0 win in six innings in game two. With today's results, the Tommies move to 18-4 overall and are now 2-2 in league play, while Saint Ben's is 12-8 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC.
Game 1
After Melissa Seldon homered in the bottom of the third inning to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead, the Tommies came back to tie the game in the top of the fourth, manufacturing a run following a leadoff double by Megan Bush.
A trio of hits in the bottom of the seventh gave the Blazers the win, as Becky Gigstad slapped a walk off RBI double to stamp the score final at 2-1.
Game 2
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Tommies scored two runs in three of the first four innings to open up an early 6-0 lead. UST followed with a run in the top of the fifth and the top of the seventh to take an 8-0 lead, which is where it would stay for the remainder of the afternoon.
Five St. Thomas players recorded multiple hits and eight players tallied a base knock, as the Tommies racked up 15 hits as a team in the offensive onslaught. The UST attack was led by Bianca Peterson, who went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the game.
Morgan Murphy went all six innings on the rubber for UST, holding the Blazers to just two hits in the shutout win.
The Tommies will travel to Moorhead tomorrow afternoon to take on Concordia in another MIAC doubleheader that begins at 4:00 p.m.
