Stone sharp, W. Basketball wins opener

Senior guard Katie Stone had 21 points, including five 3-pointers, as No. 12-ranked St. Thomas held off a veteran St. Norbert team, 62-60, in non-conference women's basketball play Saturday at UST's Schoenecker Arena.
The Toms (1-0) graduated seven of their top 11 players from a 30-1 team, while St. Norbert (0-1) returns four starters from a 22-4, NCAA playoff team.
St. Thomas outrebounded the Green Knights 42-23; had a 20-12 edge in bench points; a 13-5 edge in second-chance scoring; and a 21-9 advantage on 3-point scoring.
St. Norbert trailed by eight at the end of the second and third quarters. Down 56-44, it used a 13-4 run in the final seven minutes to pull within three points, but was unable to tie or take the lead.
UST led 61-57 and was fouled with 21 seconds left. Maddie Wolkow made the first free throw but missed the second for a 62-57 score and the clock under 20 seconds. As SNC stormed up court, Wolkow collided with a SNC player on a pick and fell to the floor, while play continued. The clock was drained to three seconds left before a foul was called on the Tommies near the SNC foul line. As trainers tended to the injured player at the opposite end of the court, a bench technical foul was assessed to UST. That gave the Green Knights four free throws plus possession of the ball and new life.
The visitors made the first two free throws, missed the next and made the fourth to trim the lead to 62-60. On the inbounds play near mid court, UST freshman Margaret Miller stole the pass and dribbled out the clock.
UST center Kaitlin Langer was in foul trouble and fouled out in 21 minutes of play with 10 points and three rebounds. Mykenzie Spaulding had eight points and thre rebounds in 10 minutes off the bench
