Shaeffer's late burst lifts Men's Hoops

Junior guard Grant Shaeffer scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half Saturday evening as the visiting Tommies (1-0) scored a 76-62 non-conference men's basketball win at UW-Eau Claire (0-1).
Shaeffer scored all 18 of his second-half points during a game-closing 26-12 run over the final 9:52.
No. 4-ranked UST had only seven turnovers and recorded a 40-36 edge in rebounds while shooting 47 percent from the field. The Toms had a 14-5 advantage in second-chance points and received scoring from nine different players.
Ryan Saarela had 10 points and 11 rebounds; Taylor Montero had 14 points, and Cortez Tillman had 12 points.
St. Thomas plays two games in Baltimore, Md., next weekend in a tournament hosted by Stevenson. On Friday night, Emory is the opponent; on Saturday evening, Southern Vermont is the foe.
