Softball splits, plays one on Sunday for title

Tommie Softball split two Saturday games at the Super Regional in Naperville, Ill., and will play one rematch Sunday with a berth in the eight-team national finals at stake.
No. 13-ranked St. Thomas won 7-6 in nine innings but lost 12-2 in five innings. The Tommies (41-7) and Cardinals (33-12) play at 11 a.m. Sunday to determine the Super Regional winner.
In the first game, UST had leads of 4-0 and 6-4 but needed Megan DuPuis' one-out, walk-off single in the last of the ninth inning for the winning run. Erin Mussett started the rally with a single. Pinch runner McKenzie Wergin took third on two walks. After a fly out, DuPuis slapped the game-winning hit to right field.
The Toms broke to a 2-0 lead in game two, but North Central tied the score with two run in the third inning. The Cardinals stuck for 10 runs off two UST pitchers in the fifth inning to end the game on the 10-run rule.
St. Thomas had 20 hits and nine runs over 14 innings on the day. Jenna Hoffman went 5-for-7 on the day; Bianca Peterson went 4-for-6; and Emily Gregory was 3-for-8 with three RBI. In game one, Kristin Bigelbach, Mary Rentz and DuPuis each had two hits.
