Softball takes sole possession of first in MIAC

Junior Kimmy Hassel went 6-for-9 on the day and four Tommie pitchers allowed no walks and just two solo home runs in Wednesday's 6-1, 8-1 road sweep of Macalester in MIAC softball play.
The No. 16-ranked Toms (32-6 overall, 19-1 MIAC) moved into sole possession of the conference lead. Gustavus split a doubleheader with Augsburg and fell one game back into second place.
UST can secure no worse than a share of the MIAC title with one victory in Saturday's 1 p.m. home doubleheader vs. St. Ben's.
Hassel has 64 hits in 38 games, including 35 hits in 20 MIAC games. She raised her season average to .481. Hassel has no errors in 85 defensive chances at second base in MIAC play.
Sophomore Emily Gregory hit her seventh home run of the season and 16th on her career. She had four hits on the day. Sophomore Jenna Hoffman also had four hits, including a double in each game.
In all, UST had 26 hits in the sweep and lifted its season averge to .372. Ten different players had a hit in the 13-hit attack in game two.
Freshman Kendra Bowe (17-0) worked six innings and had seven strikeouts to win game one. Freshman Treya Connell (5-3) pitched six innings and fanned three in game two.
