Volleyball tops No. 15 Blugolds, takes Auggie title

No. 15-ranked St. Thomas outlasted No. 12 UW-Eau Clare in five sets Saturday afternoon to cap a 4-0 weekend and take first place in the eight-team Augsburg Invitational.
It was the fifth year in a row that Coach Thanh Pham's team won the Augsburg Invitational with a 4-0 sweep, and the third win over Eau Claire in the championship match.
UST started the day with a 25-12, 25-22, 25-22 win over Central (Iowa), then topped Eau Claire in the championship match, 25-15, 22-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-12.
The Tommies (5-2) landed two players on the All-Tournament team -- senior setter Emily Foster (162 assists, 50 digs in 14 sets) and sophomore libero Kaitlain Wachter (89 digs in 14 sets).
Senior middle Jill Osborne had 40 kills and hit .345 on the weekend in three matches. Senior outside hitter Katie Bonine had 23 kills and 30 digs in the five-set win over Eau Claire and had 52 kills on the weekend.
The Tommies start MIAC play Wednesday with a 7 p.m. match at home against No. 18 St. Olaf. It will be the first competition in the new Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex.

Friday story
The No. 15-ranked St. Thomas volleyball team won both Friday matches in the Augsburg Invitational. The Tommies (3-2) topped Northwestern College, 25-19, 25-22, 25-14, and beat Macalester, 25-13, 25-12, 25-17.
The Tommies play two Saturday matches, including an 11 a.m. battle with Central (Iowa).
