Baseball sweeps Bethel, now 18-2 on season

Sophomore Charles Bruchu went 6-for-7 with a walk in eight at-bats on the day to lead St. Thomas to an 8-3, 12-3 sweep of host Bethel in Saturday's MIAC baseball doubleheader in Arden Hills.

Bruchu went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer in game one.

Matt Olson went 5-for-8 on the afternnoon for the Toms (18-2 overall, 5-1 MIAC), who pounded 28 hits in the sweep.

In game two, Tayler Rahm homered and was 2-for-2 with two walks, and Tom Wippler had three hits.

Game two starter Matt Nelson allowed one run and two hits over five innings to improve to 3-0.

In game one, sophomore lefty Bryce Gapinski worked into the sixth inning to win his fourth consecutive start. An error and two-run homer in the sixth let BU pull within 5-3 but Brandon Stone came on relief and closed out the win. The score was 1-1 after four innings but UST scored two run in the fifth and sixth and three runs in the top of the seventh.

Concordia (4-0) swept Augsburg (4-2) to move into first place. St. John's swept two close games with St. Olaf and is tied with the Toms at 5-1.

St. Thomas is home Tuesday to play Macalester in a 2:30 doubleheader.
