One-hit shutouts power Softball in Tuesday sweep
4/15/2008 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Sophomore Marta Radcliffe and senior Maria Bye each threw one-hit shutouts to lead No. 5-ranked St. Thomas to Tuesday's MIAC softball doubleheader sweep of visiting Augsburg.
With a stiff wind blowing in and playing havoc with many airborne balls, the Tommies (27-3 overall, 12-0 MIAC) won 8-0 in five innings in game one and completed the sweep with a 5-0 victory in game two. Augsburg (13-17, 9-3) had just five baserunners on the day and none reached second base.
Radcliffe struck out 16 of the 23 batters she faced and didn't walk a batter. She allowed a fourth inning single by Augsburg's Jessa Hinz, and Tiffany Magnuson reached on a two-out throwing error in the sixth. Radcliffe hasn't allowed a run in her last 19 innings on the mound and has allowed just one run in 33.1 innings this season in MIAC play.
Bye (13-0 season record) ran her MIAC career record to 38-1 as she allowed one hit and two walks while striking out seven. The lone Auggie hit in game one was a fourth-inning single by Jennifer Castillo.
UST sophomore Alison Wright went 3-for-6 on the day and ran her hitting streak to 12 games.
St. Thomas tied its own conference record as it won its 44th game in row vs. MIAC opposition. That matched a streak of wins from 2003-2005, also set by Coach John Tschida's Tommies. The Toms also won their 31st in row at home diamond.
St. Thomas is home Thursday afternoon to face Concordia-Moorhead.
