Toms reach 20 wins with good weekend

No. 4-ranked Concordia and No. 11-ranked St. Thomas each went 4-0 on the weekend to lead the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to a victory over the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in the Volleyball Border Battle that concluded Saturday at St. Thomas.

The MIAC finished 11-5 in head-to-head matches vs. four Iowa teams.

Concordia (17-1) rallied from a 2-1 games deficit to edge No. 9-ranked Central in five games, including a 15-12 margin to close it out. The Cobbers also topped Cornell in three games.

St. Thomas (20-4) capped an unbeaten weekend as it beat Cornell in four games and beat Central in four games. The Dutch (18-6) lost to the Tommies 30-16, 26-30, 30-22, 30-23. UST beat Central in five games last November on the same floor in the NCAA playoffs.

Rachelle Dosch had 60 kills and 67 digs in 14 games to lead the Tommies. She surpassed 1,500 career kills (1,545) and 1,600 career digs (1,661).

The Tommies are home Wednesday to face Gustavus (7 p.m.).

Cornell and nationally-ranked Concordia, Central and St. Thomas all went 2-0 in Friday's opening day of the eight-team Iowa-Minnesota Volleyball Border Battle Tournament at UST's Schoenecker Arena and Coughlan Fieldhouse.

The Iowa Conference and Minnesota Conference teams played to a 4-4 draw.

Cornell (12-10) used monster comebacks to top St. Benedict (9-7) and No. 22-rated Carleton (8-8) in five-game victories.

No. 9-ranked Central (18-4) was pressed by No. 22 Carleton and St. Ben's before winning both matches in three games. No. 11-ranked St. Thomas (18-4) also swept a pair of three-game decisions over Buena Vista (13-12) and Wartburg (10-12).

No. 4-rated Concordia-Moorhead (15-1) topped Wartburg in three and Buena Vista in four games.
