Junior P. J. Theisen had 227 all-purpose yards and freshman Jake Casey and junior Jimmy Mullen combined for 166 rushing yards to help St. Thomas post a 21-7 victory over Carleton in Saturday's MIAC football game in Northfield.
St. Thomas (2-4 overall, 2-3 MIAC) halted a two-game losing streak and won its 13th in a row over the Knights. The Toms are 20-2 vs. Northfield schools since 1995.
The victory, St. Thomas' 496th in 101 varsity seasons, let eighth-year Coach Don Roney move into a tie for third on the UST football coaching win list. He's now 44-31 (43-23 in conference games).
UST senior co-captain Joel Korte caught four passes for 38 yards and became the Toms' 18th player to surpass 1,000 career receiving yards. Korte has 85 catches for 1,037 yards and six TDs.
UST led 14-0 at halftime, but saw the lead cut to seven points as Carleton (3-4, 1-4) drove 65 yards in 11 plays on the first drive of the second half for a TD.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Tommies got some breathing room. UST had a 55-yard TD run by Theisen nullified by a penalty, but a few plays later freshman QB David Sauer threw his first college TD pass, a 22-yarder to junior Ian Lewis.
UST had 480 yards of offense to the Knights' 258. Theisen caught seven passes for 131 yards and rushed three times for 55 yards.
Andrew Ubbelohde was in on 16 tackles, including three for losses, to lead the defense. Ubbelohde now has 86 tackles in six games to rank in the top three nationally. The Toms also held Carleton sophomore R.J. Jackson to a modest 125 all-purpose yards, well under his season average and half of his 2004 output vs. the Toms.
Freshman Nick Shannon made his first career start at cornerback and had a fumble recovery, eight tackles and a pass break-up. Junior Justin Nwadiashi had a fourth-quarter interception to help seal the win. Sophomore Josh Schwingler was in on 11 tackles in his best college performance.
UST, which lost starting QB Ryan Jansen to a season-ending injury Oct. 1, used two QBs in the victory. Senior Justin Lockrem (12-of-22, 1 INT, 154 yards) started and played the first one and a half quarters and went over 2,000 career passing yards in the process. Sauer finished the game and completed 11-of-18 for 107 yards and a TD with one picked off.
St. Thomas hosts Gustavus next Saturday.
