Herzberger 24 yd field goal St. Thomas 21, Coe (Iowa) 12 St. Thomas (1-0) halted an eight-game losing streak to non-conference opponents as it recorded six sacks and allowed just 176 yards of offense in a 21-12 football victory over Coe (1-1) Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Tommie defense, which held Coe out of the end zone over the final 3 1-2 quarters, got a fumble recovery and a sack from senior DE John Kaiser; a sack and 12 tackles from junior LB Andrew Ubbelohde; and two sacks from junior DE Luke Rezac. The Toms forced eight punts and stopped Coe twice inside the UST 30 on 4th-down conversion tries in the last 1 1-2 quarters. The Toms held on 4th-and-5 at the 23 late in the third, and held on 4th-and-1 at the 27 late in the fourth. The Tommies scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter off long scoring drives and gained 339 yards of offense on the game. Junior RB Walter Dosh rushed for 115 yards on 26 carries and senior RB Peter Ridley had a 48-yard scoring run and finished with 75 yards on 13 carries. Freshman PK Adam Valenta, kicking in his hometown of Cedar Rapids, made all three PATs in his UST debut. Junior QB Justin Lockrem completed 16-of-32 for 147 yards and was especially strong in the second quarter, as he completed 10-of-13 for 77 yards on scoring drives of 75, 60 and 71 yards. Sophomores P.J. Theisen (four catches, 45 yards) and Ian Lewis (four, 32 yards) led the receivers. St. Thomas survived three turnovers, including a fumble and an interception in UST territory in the third quarter, but allowed just two field goals off those turnovers. The Toms had no penalties in the second half after five in the first half. It was the first season-opening win in Coach Don Roney's seven-year tenure, as the Tommies in past seasons went 0-4 vs. Division II Bemidji State and 0-2 vs. St. Norbert. It was UST's first season-opening road victory since 1986; first win in the state of Iowa since 1958; and halted a six-game road losing streak. Coe senior standout QB Joe Brannen, who led the Kohawks to nine wins and an NCAA playoff berth in 2002, was limited to 134 yards passing (15-of-36) by the Tommie pressure and coverage. Freshman RB Neal Suckow, who scored five touchdowns and rushed for 225 yards in Coe's opening win at Westminster, was held to 88 yards of combined rushing and receiving yards. It was one of four MIAC games vs. Iowa Conference teams on the day. Central beat Bethel in overtime, 21-20; St. Olaf rallied from a 31-0 deficit to edge Luther 32-31; and No. 5-ranked Wartburg kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired to fend off Augsburg's upset hopes in a 27-24 thriller in Minneapolis. Trailing 6-0 after the first period, the Toms used an 18-play, 75-yard scoring drive on UST's third possession for a 7-6 lead. After Coe stopped the Toms twice at the one-yard-line, Dosh scored on 4th-and inches. On the next drive, Ridley's 48-yard run capped a 61-yard scoring drive for a 14-6 lead. On the next drive, Dosh broke off a 45-yard run to the Coe 29, and a few plays later Lockrem hit TE Billy Schreiber with a 6-yard scoring strike to push the lead to 15 points. After a late first-half Tommie interception, Coe drove to the 20-yard-line but stalled and kicked a 37-yard field goal to pull within 21-9 with less than 15 seconds to play in the first half. The Kohawks added a 24-yard field goal in the third quarter. Coe drove 49 yards on its second possession of the game, aided by a roughing penalty, to take a 6-0 lead with 6:00 left in the first period. UST's Mike Rouse blocked the extra point. Coe used a 41-yard return by Suckow to set up in Tommie territory at the 49. Steve Groth intercepted Coe's first-down pass, but a roughing the passer penalty negated the pickoff giving Coe 1st-and-10 at the UST 34.

Coe converted a 4th-and-1 for a first down at the UST 23, then scored two plays later. But it was all St. Thomas after that.
