Football falls 51-3 at nationally-ranked Stout

St. Thomas dropped to 1-3 on the football season with Saturday night's 51-3 road defeat at No. 17-ranked Wisconsin-Stout. The winners had no turnovers while getting three interceptions and two fumbles by the Tommies.

The Toms' lone points came when freshman Brian McKenna kicked a 33-yard field goal in the first quarter to cut the deficit to 7-3. Stout gained more than 400 yards en route to a 41-3 halftime lead.

For the Tommies, soph DB Tom Fritze tied a school record with 20 tackles (six solo, 14 assisted). Junior DB Steve Groth had 14 tackles. Luke Rezac had the Toms' lone sack. The Tommies played without starting linebackers Andy Ubbelohde and Marshall Clamons and will play the season without starting linebacker John Kaiser.

Senior RB Justin Kostner rushed 17 times for 78 yards, caught four passes for 25 yards and returned two kickoffs for 60 yards. Starting QB Justin Lockrem was 5-for-14 in passing for 71 yards before leaving with an injury. Backup QB Kyle Sherwin completed 10-for-16 pass attempts for 88 yards before leaving with an injury. The Tommies gained 239 yards of offense but were hurt by the five turnovers and five sacks. Punter Kyle Davenport averaged 41.2 yards on five punts. Luke Miller had three catches for 42 yards.

The Toms' three losses have come to teams with a combined 10-0 record vs. Division III opponents.

The Tommies return home to play St. Olaf Oct. 4 in a 1 p.m. Homecoming clash at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
