Tommie defense tough in 54-0 win over Hamline
Justin Kostner, Walter Dosh and Justin Lockrem had big days and the St. Thomas defense held visiting Hamline to just 32 yards of offense in Saturday's 54-0 victory in MIAC football at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
The Tommies (1-2, 1-1 MIAC) gained 26 first downs and 539 yards of offense. They held the Pipers (1-2, 0-2) to one first down. St. Thomas broke a four-game losing streak dating back to November 2002 and beat Hamline for the eighth year in a row.
The Tommies, who led 18-0 at halftime, didn't allow a first down until four minutes remained in the game. Hamline had two passes intercepted, was sacked four times and had a punt partially blocked. The Pipers completed just 3-for-16 passing attempts for 10 yards.
Kostner, a senior from Arcadia, Wis., rushed 30 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns, and caught three passes for 44 yards.
Dosh, a sophomore from Green Bay who transferred from South Dakota State, had three touchdowns and gained 174 all-purpose yards in his first game in O'Shaughnessy Stadium. Dosh returned a kickoff 68-yards kickoff to set up a third-quarter TD. He came back with three fourth-quarter touchdowns -- a 64-yard punt return, and rushes of 15 and 3 yards.
Lockrem, a sophomore from Woodbury, sat out last week's MIAC loss to Bethel with an injury. He completed 15-of-20 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns in three quarters of play Saturday in just his second career start.
Senior RB Nick Whitehead added a 31-yard TD run, and soph TE Billy Schreiber had his first career TD catch.
For the balanced Tommie defense, junior Paul Sommerstad and senior Jason Larson had interceptions, and soph DE Dan Reisenauer had two sacks. Several Hamline passes were tipped or broken up.
For the Pipers, Jeff Mauch had an interception and Tyler Schultz and Aaron Seliga were in on 11 tackles each.
Next Saturday, St. Thomas plays at No. 7-ranked UW-Stout (7 p.m. kickoff), while Hamline hosts Bethel.
